JMGQ has engaged independent Arts Writer and Curator Lisa Bryan-Brown to develop and curate a juried exhibition to tour. JMGQ's last independently curated and juried exhibition was Ornamentomology which was launched just under a decade ago in 2008!

This JMGQ membership exhibition is thematically focused on the concept of tools, exploring the conceptual breadth and layers of meaning that operate within this theme for contemporary jewellers, metalsmiths and small objects practitioners. Essential to any artisan's practice, tools provide an interesting and reflexive conceptual point of entry into contemporary jewellery and small objects practices.
While traditional tools and their use remain an essential part of a contemporary J&SO artist's training, working within an artistic context can lead to the development of ingenious applications for processes and unexpected uses of materials. The rise of 3D printing technologies and lasercutting devices mean contemporary jewellers are now incorporating these modern mass-production tools into their work as well.
Furthermore, jewellery itself can be understood as a kind of tool within the act of adornment. The way wearable artworks function to articulate ideas related to the status and identity of their wearer is fertile territory within the premise of this exhibition, particularly when the potential to relate these ideas back to the making processes is considered.
With these ideas in mind, what does it mean to work in a bespoke, hand-made way in the face of the widespread uptake of modern technologies? What is the place of these new technologies within the modern jeweller's bench? With the increase in cheaply available mass-manufactured jewellery, what is the role of hand-crafted contemporary jewellery in design? And how does a jeweller’s relationship to their tools, whatever they may be, influence the works they create?

All applications must include the following:
Artist Statement – no more than 500 words
Artwork Proposal – 1-3 pages describing your proposed work for the exhibition. Can include sketches, words, and indicative images.
1-2 page CV
5 to 10 images of recent works (please title each image with your name, work title and year, e.g. JaneSmith_Bracelet2016). Please do not send files bigger than 3mb, 72dpi images preferred.
This is a juried exhibition. Entries will be judged by a panel of selectors against the selection criteria outlined below. The artist statement and artwork proposal should reflect a consideration of these points.
Conceptual relationship of the artwork proposal to the theme as outlined in the exhibition synopsis
Craftsmanship and quality of work as illustrated by the images of recent works
Ingenuitive use of a particular tool, technique or application
Launching in Brisbane at POP Gallery, Queensland College of Art, this exhibition will present a critical look at contemporary jewellery and small objects practices within Queensland.
The exhibition will tour to venues throughout Queensland and possibly interstate. There will be a chance to align a program of practical workshops/ other public programs and events with the exhibition tour, subject to venue demand and resources.
A professional illustrated catalogue will be produced to accompany and document the exhibition.
