2011 - Boxed In Revisited
Exhibitors will provided with a 6mm thick piece of plywood which acts as the base of the glass topped box (290x190x60mm) and which thus allows a 54mm high internal space. Exhibitors will have a choice of leaving their work free-standing, or fixing it as they wish, to the plywood base. A lock will be provided and the cases remain the property of JMGQ (Dwyer, M 2000 ‘Exhibition Report’ Paillon, no. 25, pp. 8-9).
Eleven years on the cases still remain the property of JMGQ and are the focal point of our latest exhibition Boxed In: Revisited. Participants are asked toutilise these same boxes and create new works within the same parameters as the original exhibition. In a cross-over of old and new, JMGQ members who participated in Boxed In (2000) will be given the chance to explore new directions, or re-visit previous ideas. More recently joined members and those who were not involved eleven years ago are given the chance to inject fresh ideas and styles into an exhibition where the only limitation is size.
The objects within the boxes can take any form, structure, style or presentation. They can be mounted to the backing plate or rest on the floor of the box. The layout can be positioned portrait or landscape. They can recognise the box and work within the form or they can be completely separate and use the box as merely a frame, cabinet or protective device. The design in the prerogative of the artist as long as they keep to the confine of the box.
