2013 - Confluence Influence
Confluence Influence is an exhibition held in conjunction with the 15th Biennial Conference of the Jewellers and Metalsmiths Group of Australia, Participation and Exchange. This conference examines the notion of the participative community, the exchange of knowledge and the value of the collective. Reflecting upon this theme, this JMGQ members' exhibition asks participants to acknowledge the influence others have had on their work.
We all know the value of inspiration that can occur in formal and informal situations: conversations with other artists, participation in Master Classes, responding to an exhibition brief or reading cultural theory, chance or planned encounters. These can directly influence the materials we use, the techniques we employ, our systems of working, our motivations, and ambitions. Were you given a box of a material that has, as a result, become a key feature of your work? Did you attend a master class and discover a love for enamel, or glass casting, or forging? Is there a point where you can identify a shift in your thinking, your approach, your concept or the works you produce?
As artists, it is nearly impossible to escape the influence of those around us – our teachers, peers, mentors, colleagues and other artists and this all informs our practice. We constantly collect pieces of information, visual cues, ideas, techniques and skills from one another. This exchange and meeting of ideas is the lifeblood of our creative world.
Exhibiting Artists: Adrianna Collard, Andy Lowrie, Anita Milroy, Ann Chadwick, Ashleigh Hearne, Barbara Vivash, Catherine Large, Doreen Ferris, Julie Day, Pat Holcombe, Jandy Pannell, Jeanette Lee, Joan Teo, Karah Sinden, Kathleen Hunt, Kathleen Moorwood, Katie Stormonth, Leigh Wagner, Lisa Crispin, Lynn Mortensen, Margaret Wegener Paola Raggo, Penny McIntyre, Pierina Curties, Pippin Blackwell, Sher McKain, Sue Preston and Vanessa Williams.
