The Ornamentomology Touring Exhibition has started in earnest at the Graduate Gallery at Tribune Street, South bank, (Opening hours 10am – 4pm Wed – Sat) with a closing party to be held on Saturday 1 March 2008 from 10am – 12noon. The exhibition will then proceed to Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum from 8 March - 19 April 2008 and then onto Stanthorpe Regional Gallery Stanthorpe Regional Gallery from 25 April – 20 May 2008.
‘Ornamentomology, features jewellery created by selected members of JMGQ and inspired by the extraordinary microscopic insects revealed in the remarkable photographs of David E. Julian Lawrence has been designing and crafting jewellery for over 25 years. His original training was at the School of Jewellery Design at Randwick Technical College in Sydney, following this he had 15 years working in the commercial jewellery industry. During this time and subsequently, his work has been recognised for its unique style and he has won numerous design and craftsmanship awards in De beers Diamonds competitions and the Jewellers Association Australia Design Awards. For the past 12 years he has operating from his studios on the Gold Coast. ‘Julian was willing to share his knowledge and industry tips. His teaching style was very supportive’. Feedback from a student of a Pave Master Class Julian taught in 2007. Gypsy Setting is a method of setting stones with a very tight fitting edge of metal. Unlike bezel and claw settings in a gypsy setting the stone is secured flush into the metal. Course Outline: Julian will lead a focused 4 day Master Class over 4 consecutive Saturdays. The class will introduce and explore the specialised technique of Gypsy Setting.
